Slidell to vote Tuesday on outlawing drinking, smoking in Mardi Gras 'family zone'

The Slidell City Council at its meeting Tuesday is scheduled to vote on whether to outlaw drinking and smoking in front of Bethany Lutheran Church during Mardi Gras parades.

If the proposed legislation passes, revelers would not be able to imbibe liquor or smoke tobacco in a "family zone" bounded by Gause Boulevard, Eighth Street, Louisiana Avenue and Ninth Street, which encompasses the property of Bethany Lutheran. The measure calls for misdemeanor citations for anyone caught indulging in either substance in the zone, except for authorized parade participants passing through.
