For several years now, actress Halle Berry has been engaged in a sometimes-rancorous child support battle with her former boyfriend, who is the father of her young daughter. It appears to have ended late last month with a decision by a Los Angeles judge that the Oscar-winning star pay her ex $16,000 per month in child support.
That’s not all. She has also been ordered to pay $115,000 in retroactive child support and pay for the 6-year-old girl’s tuition until she finishes high school or turns 19. She must also pick up the legal fees of her ex, Canadian model Gabriel Aubrey. The child’s health care costs will be shared by the former couple, who share equally in the child’s custody.
The matter of custody, which was resolved in 2011, was another source of dispute between the pair, who broke up in 2010 after being together for five years. After she split with Aubrey, Berry married actor Olivier Martinez and tried to take her daughter to France to live with the two of them. Berry and Martinez have a son who is less than a year old.
Amid these legal wrangling came some much-publicized physical ones as well, including a fight between the two men one Thanksgiving when Aubrey brought his daughter to Berry’s home. The child’s nanny at one point sought a restraining order against Aubrey.
While most Louisiana child custody and support battles are likely not this bitter, when child relocation is involved, the situation can be difficult for all involved. It’s important to have a family law attorney to guide you through this stressful journey and help fight for what’s best for you and your child.
