Louisiana child custody exchange results in arrest

Louisiana child custody arrangements can become contentious — not just between parents, but among other family members as well. Sadly, the recent hand-off of a child resulted in an alleged armed confrontation. Now a Louisiana man is facing an aggravated assault charge.

The 27-year-old Haughton man was arrested on Interstate 30 after police received reports that he had pulled a gun on another person at a Caddo Valley Valero gas station. The defendant and the woman on whom he allegedly pulled a gun were in the midst of a handover of a child when the dispute occurred.

According to the woman, when the man became angry, she pulled the child out of his truck. According to the probable cause affidavit, the man then “pulled out a handgun and laid his arms over his truck bed,” demanding that she give him the child. Instead of letting him take the child, the woman ran inside the gas station and asked the attendant to call the police.

After police arrested the man, they took him to the Clark County Detention Center. He was released on bond.

It was not reported what the relationship between the man and woman is or how they are related to the child. The woman was identified only as a family member. It was also not specified who was handing over the child to whom.

According to the affidavit, the man admitted “that he made a huge mistake and knew he should not have pulled the gun out, but he did it because he was angry.” He claims that he “stayed close to his truck” after he pulled the gun from the center console.

Fortunately, most child custody situations do not result in this kind of situation. However, when there is tension between parents or other family members, it is best for the safety and well-being of all involved — particularly the child — that exchanges are done in a safe location under the observation of a third party. Louisiana family law attorneys can help parents arrange to exchange custody of their child so that they will not subject him or her to any stress or danger.
