Making The Complex Understandable

13 Louisiana children get their forever families in single day

Just one day before National Adoption Day (Nov. 22) 13 children from around the Calcasieu Parish officially became part of a family. Family court judges finalized the adoptions at the courthouse in Lake Charles.

National Adoption Day, which is the Saturday before Thanksgiving, is an annual effort around the country to "raise awareness of the more than 100,000 children in foster care waiting to find permanent, loving families." It's sponsored by a coalition of partners that includes the Childen's Action Network and The Alliance for Children's Rights.

Nine of the children whose adoptions were made official on Nov. 21 were adopted through private organizations -- primarily through Moss Bluff's De Colores Adoptions International. The other four were adopted through the state's Department of Children and Family Services. Some of the children adopted had been in foster care for years. However, others were just infants.

An official with DCFS says that while almost 600 Louisiana children have been adopted through the agency this year, there are still hundreds more around the state who need homes. Louisiana has a foster-to-adopt program.

A number of the parents who participated in what the media referred to as a "mass adoption event" had been fostering the children they adopted, but wanted to give them a "forever" home. One Iowa couple, who officially adopted their 17-month foster son that day, said they became aware of the need in Southwest Louisiana for both foster and adoptive parents.

Louisianans who open their homes and hearts to children who don't have their own family know that the process is often not a quick or easy one. Obviously, the needs and safety of the child are of paramount importance. Experienced legal advice is essential to help adoptive parents ensure that the adoption process goes smoothly and that all potential legal issues are considered. This important for the child as well as the parents as they begin their life together as a forever family.
