Making The Complex Understandable

Study results find divorces most common in March and August

Is there such a thing as a "divorce season?" According to the authors of a recent study, there is. The authors of the study, a professor of sociology and a doctoral candidate at the University of Washington reviewed divorce data for the state between 2001 and 2015. The results of analyzing that data were interesting: divorce filings peaks during March and August.

The authors believe that this peak could be due to "domestic rituals" about family vacations. Since winter and summer holidays are often considered "inappropriate" when it comes to filing for divorce, the periods right afterwards are when the most divorces in Washington state are filed.

The professor said in a statement, "People tend to face the holidays with rising expectations, despite what disappointments they might have had in years past." When a vacation or a holiday doesn't bring the happy times that are expected, then spouses may begin to realize that their marriage is really over.

According to the authors, August may be chosen because the family's vacation has already happened, but the kids haven't started the new school year yet. March, they believe, is because couples had to deal with bills from the holidays in the winter and they need to find a divorce attorney.

The study wasn't initially started to find out when divorces peaked. Instead, the researchers wanted to find out how the recession affected the stability of marriages. However, the data showed that the pattern was "very robust from year to year."

So far, the researchers have also analyzed data from four other states, including Arizona, Ohio, Florida and Minnesota. The professor said the seasonal divorce pattern is about the same.

If you are considering a divorce -- no matter what season it may be -- information from an experienced Louisiana family law attorney can prove beneficial.
