Making The Complex Understandable

Louisiana woman arrested in elder abuse case

When we choose to put our loved ones in an assisted living situation, it's usually with no small amount of trepidation. After all, the loved one is usually a parent who's cared for you for their entire lives. You've seen them go from lively, independent people to someone who needs more care than you can give them. A nursing home can be a great solution, and many elderly loved ones find the medical care and stimulation they need to feel fulfilled in their twilight years.

Unfortunately, the very fact that they need assistance makes them vulnerable to neglect and abuse. Sometimes institutions don't have enough staff, and that leaves your loved one without the attention they deserve. Others try to cut corners. And sometimes it's just a bad apple that slips through the cracks and ends up abusing someone in their care.

That's what police are alleging happened at a nursing home in Lincoln Parish in early February. The authorities are still conducting an investigation into what happened, but we do know that a 58-year-old woman from Simsboro was arrested and charged with two counts of cruelty to the infirm. The charges come after officials investigated the home for over a week. They did not indicate whether the abuse was physical, emotional or financial in nature.

It's tragic when things like this happen, but thankfully we don't have to stand by and watch it happen. If you suspect the abuse of a loved one, an elder law attorney may be able to help you hold the institution accountable.
