How good parenting can improve child custody cases

For most Louisiana parents, losing daily access to their children is a thought that is difficult to bear. For some, however, a divorce and child custody schedule will lead to a change in the level of access that a parent has to his or her children. In the event that a child custody case is necessary, there are ways that parents can position themselves for a positive outcome.

Fortunately, those same preparation efforts are also conducive to being a good parent, regardless of whether one is preparing for divorce or happily married. One of the most important things that parents can do to improve their relationship with their child is to take an active role in the child’s life. That means being present both physically and emotionally.

In many families, spouses fall into a pattern in which one takes on the role of primary breadwinner while the other handles the bulk of duties related to raising the kids. That arrangement may work for the family, but it places the working parent at a distinct disadvantage in the event of a custody case. The parent who handles all of the parent/teacher conferences, doctor’s appointments, playdates and soccer games will be able to claim a closer bond with the children.

When one parent works outside of the home and has less of a presence in a child’s day-to-day life, it is important to offset that absence with plenty of one-on-one time. That can come in the form of being the one to tuck a child into bed every night with a story and a nighttime routine, or it can come in the form of regular father/child weekend trips or campouts in the backyard. No matter how a parent chooses to structure time with their kids, it is essential to remain closely connected.

When it comes to matters of divorce and child custody, there are many necessary tasks that are difficult to accomplish. Maintaining a close bond with one’s children, however, is a need that is simpler to meet and is also deeply rewarding. By making every effort to stay connected with one’s children, Louisiana parents who are eventually faced with a divorce will have a far easier time reaching an outcome that they can live with, rather than being forced to accept a custody schedule that leaves them feeling left on the sidelines.
