Abedin and Weiner to settle divorce outside of court

Many Louisiana residents are aware of the troubled marriage between Huma Abedin and Anthony Weiner. Abedin worked as a top aide to Hillary Clinton for many years, while Weiner is a former congressman. The couple have made headlines over the past decade based on Wiener’s recurring scandals. Few people were shocked when Abedin filed for divorce in 2017. The recent announcement that the couple has withdrawn their divorce petition did leave much of the public in deep shock and disbelief.

Upon closer examination, the decision to withdraw the divorce case makes more sense. Both parties have made efforts to have their divorce conducted in a private manner, including having the ability to file as “anonymous” rather than under their legal names. Those efforts were denied by the judge handling the matter.

That leaves the couple with little option other than to withdraw their divorce petition and negotiate the details of their divorce settlement outside of court. By doing so, they ensure that the details of their private lives remain private, and are not part of the public record. Because the couple share young son, their desire to maintain a degree of privacy is understandable.

Louisiana readers may learn nothing new about the high profile divorce. Anthony Weiner is currently serving a 21 month prison sentence for sending sexually charged text messages to a teenage girl. His return to politics is unlikely, although Huma Abedin is considered a rising star in the Democratic Party. Hopefully, both parties will be able to move forward and work together to parent their son and help him navigate the vast amount of salacious information already archived in news reports.
